What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

A Chiropractic adjustment is when a chiropractor uses his hands or an instrument to restore and realign joint motion.  Also known as spinal manipulation (or when not in the spine-shoulder manipulation, knee manipulation, foot manpulation, etc), the chiropractor’s goal is to restore full range motion and alignment. Chiropractors are bio-mechanics, or mechanics for your body.  Chiropractors free a locked joint with adjustments to restore and balance motion. Pain is relieved as irritation and stress on nerves, muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues is reduced.  Breaking up adhesions, stretching tight ligaments, and relieving stress on nerves, muscles, and other soft tissues allows a joint to move naturally, and distributes joint stress across the full joint surface. Besides treating patients for back, neck and joint pain, many chiropractors believe improving the body’s motion relieves irritation of the nervous system. Since the body’s functions are controlled by the nerves, a well adjusted body functions better and is healthier.

When a joint is properly adjusted muscles and joints can move fully, as muscles are stretched to their full length and tissue compression is reduced. As previously unused muscle fibers are exercised, normal joint motion is restored, balancing posture to relieve today’s pain as well as prevent tomorrow’s arthritic breakdown.
