Eating Healthy: 8 Changes to Make to Your Diet

There’s no doubt that the food we eat plays a huge part in our overall health and wellbeing. However, it can be challenging to know what to eat when there are so many different choices out there. It can also be difficult to make a change when you are stuck in your old habits.

Below, we are going to be discussing eight healthy changes that you can make to your diet gradually. Before long, they will become second nature to you.

Sound interesting? Let’s get started!

eat healthy

Load up on fruits and vegetables

Most of us know that fruits and vegetables are nutritious, but what many don’t realize is how much of them we should be eating. In fact, they should fill up half of your plate at every meal! Since they are full of vitamins and minerals, they come with many benefits, including helping you maintain a healthy gut, decreasing the risk of certain medical conditions, and boosting your energy. They really can be considered superfoods! Not sure how to implement them into your diet? Click here for some great ideas.

Increase your protein intake

Protein is the most filling macronutrient and comes with many benefits. It helps you retain muscle mass and may even increase the number of calories you burn per workout. Try and add a bit of protein to every meal when possible. Great sources are dairy products, eggs, lean meat, and nuts. If you’re struggling to get enough each day, you might also think about having a shake. You can check out this rice protein powder blog post for more information.

Drink more water

Water can be boring, but it’s vital for our bodies and is the only thing you can drink that is 100% healthy for you. Adults should aim to have around eight glasses a day (or more if they are being active). If you’re getting bored of it, consider adding flavor with herbs, fruit, and veg, or trying sparkling/mineral water if you need a bit of fizz. These other tips to stay hydrated may also be of some assistance.

Eat more fiber

Fiber is important for gut and bowel health and is found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes. By eating more of it, you’ll be assisting with weight loss and promoting healthy bowel movements. Consider having a glass of pressed juice or snacking on an apple throughout the day. Just make sure you leave the skin on! Otherwise, you’re removing half of the fiber.

Choose better fats

There are different kinds of fats, and in order to know what to avoid, it’s essential to understand the difference between them. In short, trans and saturated fat is bad, while monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat is considered good. Some of the foods that you should consume with “good fat” include:

  • Avocados
  • Nuts
  • Olives
  • Tofu
  • Sunflower and pumpkin seeds.

Eat whole-grain cereals

Whole grains contain nutrients such as protein, fiber, B vitamins, and antioxidants. This is unlike refined grains, which lose most of them in the refining process. Most adults should eat around 4-6 servings of them every day. Popcorn, buckwheat, brown rice, barley, and oatmeal are just a few healthy options to add to your diet. Trust us when we say you will be amazed at how much better you will feel by making smart food choices.

Avoid diet foods

When doing your next grocery shop, you might be tempted to reach for items that are labeled as so-called “diet foods.” However, they can be deceiving and may not be as good for you as they make out. While they may be “low fat,” they often contain a lot of sugar and salt to make up for lost flavor. In some cases, they may be just as bad as other “junk foods.” Always read labels to determine if they are right for you. It might take an extra few minutes, but it will be worth it.

Shop fresh

Finally, the last change to make to your diet is to remember to shop fresh. By getting whole foods, you know exactly what you are cooking, and there are no additives or preservatives. The best part is, you may even be able to save money in the process if you buy what’s currently in season.

And that’s it! By following the above, you’ll be amazed at how much better your mind and body will feel. What do you think? Are there any other diet tips you would recommend to others?
