Chiropractic for the Hyperactive Child

by Bob Burger

There is much controversy surrounding the care and treatment of the child diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD/ADHD). Drugs designed to control these children are dangerous, unpredictable and subject to abuse. More importantly, they don’t address the real problem. Drugs like Ritalin® do not get to the cause of the problem, they merely cover the symptoms, temporarily making the child “more manageable,” or worse potentially making the child a life long dependent of these drugs.
Think about this for a moment, does the ADD/ADHD child have a deficiency of stimulant drugs in his or her body. Probably not, but there are a couple areas to be checked regularly. Current thought on the problem revolves around a theory that the problem is primarily two fold. The first being diet related, the second is neurological (brain-body communication).

Diet is a very important component in the ADD/ADHD child. Very often sugar is identified as being a problem with these children. By eliminating simple sugars from this child’s diet, improvement is frequently seen. This is not a simple task, it means eliminating all white flour products as well as obvious sugar products. In many cases there is an almost addictive type behavior surrounding the use of these products, so expect some resistance.

Chiropractors are uniquely trained to handle the second component. Doctors of chiropractic are trained to recognize and remove the interference in the nervous system, which blocks or alters the brain’s ability to communicate with the body. Once the proper communication is restored, many times the ADD/ADHD child’s behavior improves.
