Yoga

Yoga is today's decendant of the earliest posture techniques.  The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, and refers to the union of mind and body.  Currently many different styles of yoga co-exist, ranging from those focused more on mind and sprituality and others focused exclusively on body. Yoga in turn fostered many different schools of thought focusing on improving posture and alignment.

Smooth Yoga

Moving slowly & smoothly with the expansion and contraction of your respiration is what yoga is all about.

One of the things I have experienced in my practice of yoga and massage is that we can all use a little "smoothing out" of the rough edges in our lives. Whether it be "time crunches," or simple repetitive motions, we often move without a thought to how we feel in the process. We just want to get where we're going, or get something over with.

It's my feeling that when we invest a little time in feeling the wonderful movements of our human anatomy, and sense its incredible smoothness, that we can really calm down, and enjoy life more. Dr. Larry Dossey, MD formerly at the Dallas Diagnostic Center made a practice of asking his patients during one period of time to close their eyes, and open them in a minute (60 seconds.)

Well, with most of them, their eyes were opening in about 20 - 30 seconds. This confirmed the existence of what he termed "time sickness," or feeling time is going 2 - 3 times faster than it really is! In practicing our yoga postures, we will be really slowing down the rate at which we move our bodies.

During my days of ‘assembly line massage,' at a Southern resort town, it dawned on me one day: "if fast paced, repetitive motion puts stress into peoples muscles, joints and tissues, then I'll bet slow motion, thoughtful movements would help to unwind this excessive tension." Sure enough, when I moved a persons' limbs or neck very slowly, it began to loosen. These subtle stretches began to combine with my previous yoga training, and some very beautiful breathing and movement patterns occurred right before my eyes, and with only minimal guidance or effort from me.

In the practice of yoga, this is basically what we're doing: stretching our bodies into a variety of positions very slowly, and holding that pose while breathing very deeply out and then in. It is important to stretch as we inhale, after exhaling fully.

In this way, we're letting go of any excess tenseness, or frozenness in the muscle or joint, then expanding into a new "freedom of movement" and posture. The classic yoga term for the poses we do is called: a'sana meaning posture "comfortably held." So, it's not necessary to overstrain getting into the pose, or to hold it too long. Just the right amount of stretch, and "holding time" for you is the right way.

Also, the number of repetitions for each pose is flexible, however 2 - 4 times is usually good. We'll find that most times, we can stretch a tiny bit more on the second or third times, & begin to loosen up so much more than if we just do each pose once. Therefore, it is better to pick say 3 - 4 poses and use those in ones practice.

A few final recommendations: it's best to have an empty stomach for at least 3 hours before doing yogic a'sanas, and to wait a half hour before eating so our systems can assimilate what we just did.

Drinking a couple glasses of water before our routine can greatly aid in stimulating our awareness of our bodies' as flowing, fluid beings. Yoga simply helps us begin to move again as we did as babies, or like cats, who as I see it are natural yogis.

Yoga Benefits

What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient system of working with the body, breath and mind. Yoga is not a religion as it has no doctrine, dogma or church and is in fact compatible with all religions even though it has its roots in Hinduism.  You don’t have to believe anything! For most, yoga is primarily working the body with awareness to achieve flexibility, strength, healing and calmness of mind, although there are many other benefits possible.  Yoga is for every body whether lithe and athletic or those who have not exercised in a long time. The perfect ‘form’ of yoga postures that are commonly seen do not necessarily mean ‘good’ yoga!

What are the Benefits of Yoga?

Provided yoga is practiced with care, it is a very safe activity and provides a great many benefits to normal healthy people as well as those with some sort of problem. Yoga works holistically on the whole body - mind - spirit system, and can be modified to suit a person in any state of ill health or temporary injury.  Limited mobility can generally be improved. Flexibility can be enhanced enabling the body to function more efficiently during normal activities.  Yoga readily complements sporting activities too - allowing muscles to relax and stretch.  The state of mind in yoga is introverted which increases one’s awareness of your body - normally ignored! Strength, stamina and balance are normally increased through yoga asanas or postures, although most forms of yoga is not aerobic.  Breath awareness and breathing exercises can also increase lung capacity and improve your breathing patterns.  Full use of the breathing apparatus and movement of the torso also massages the internal organs, improving their health and function. And last, but not least, the practicing yogi achieves a calm disposition.

Getting Started with Yoga

The subtleties of yoga mean that it is very difficult to learn by looking at a picture or reading a book, and attendance at a class is highly recommended.  Yoga is experiential - it is only through practice that it can be understood - reading and intellectualizing alone is not yoga. With asana yoga (physical postures), initially, the flexibility and strength of the body are developed and the grosser aspects of a yoga posture are learned.  Body awareness develops and correct alignment and muscle relaxation becomes possible.  Controlled breathing and a meditative mind then develop to allow the practice to proceed to maximum benefit.  It is emphasized that yoga is not really an academic exercise, but very much a practical experiential journey.  Going to a yoga class makes this journey quite painless and any problems or questions can be answered by your teacher. Practice can then be deepened with home practice and weekend yoga days, etc.

Yoga for Stress Relief
The changing economy has many of us walking around with a shadow looming over us. It seems to take a lot of effort and consciousness to do our daily tasks.

Over 5000 years ago, people began to practice physical yoga in order to help quiet their minds and prepare them for a state of deep relaxation. In this relaxation, a certain calm and blissfulness arises. In many cases, it is not “emptying the mind”, but rather creating a sense of heightened awareness and sensitivity.

If you struggle to accept loss and begin to feel the need to return to normalcy, look at seeking new and different approaches.

Yoga has all components to help relax the body, slow down the internal processes, and soothe the nervous system. With this strong foundation it is easier to accomplish the difficult tasks ahead.

The word YOGA means “union” - a union of breath, mind, and spirit. Just as America as a country unites, perhaps it’s a good time for us to unite within ourselves as well.
