An Introduction to Therapeutic Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy is the manual manipulation of muscles and soft tissue by applying pressure to the body with the intention of positively affecting the health and well being of the client or patient.

Benefits of Massage Therapy Include:

  • Massage is very effective in the relief of pain and discomfort, whether due to a particular health disorder or to chronic stress.

  • Massage increases blood circulation and lymphatic circulation, which helps remove waste and toxins from muscles.

  • Massage seems to cause a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate due to reflex effects through the sympathetic nervous system. Reflex effects include muscle relaxation, relief of spasms and cramps and increased range of motion.

  • A decrease in anxiety, tension and fatigue, along with the enhancement of a general sense of well-being is also a benefit of receiving a massage.

According to a 1998 article in the New England Journal of Medicine, massage therapy is estimated to be the third most prevalent type of alternative medical treatment sought by Americans---following Chiropractic and relaxation techniques.

In many countries massage therapy is an integral and important part of the health care system, with massage therapists working alongside doctors. In China, medical doctors perform massage therapy on their patients.

Massage Etiquette Tips

Some people are nervous or hesitant about receiving a massage for the first time. There is really no reason to be nervous; just know these simple facts.

It is best to remove all clothing and jewelry for a massage. However, it is perfectly acceptable to dress down to your level of comfort.  If you prefer to leave on some clothing, discuss this with your therapist before your session.

Share your preferences. A good massage therapist will be skilled at proper draping and he or she will never expose you.

Breathing for Low Back Pain

When you have a low back spinal condition your body will reinforce the support of the spine using muscles that normally get their recreation from the rhythmic cycle of your breathing. The guarded tension of these muscles while you are on your feet doesn't allow them to get there needed recreation and recruits other muscles to balance the tension they are putting on your skeleton. This pattern of tension becomes a habit (technical term a facilitation) which doesn't turn off when you get off your feet.

Your First Massage
Plan to arrive a few minutes before your scheduled appointment in order to fill out any required paperwork and to meet your therapist. Your massage therapist will talk to you about your specific needs and expectations. Be sure to ask what types of massage are offered and any other questions you may have.

The massage table will be prepared with fresh sheets in a warm, comfortable room with soft lighting. Most therapists have a selection of relaxing music to play during your massage. The music and lighting help put you at ease, and prepare you for a soothing and enjoyable treatment. A face cradle is provided so you can lie comfortably when on your stomach.
